USB turntable > Mac

Post by gregc »

Has anyone yet managed to record from a USB turntable to a Mac without getting the dreaded 'digital static' noise after a while?

I have been trying to record from my Pro-Ject Debut III USB into G5 Mac and have this problem - after between 5 and 15 minutes, digital noise starts. If I quit the recording, and start again, I can normally then record a whole LP without it returning. But it is incredibly annoying. I also noticed that changing sample rate in Audio/MIDI setup to 48KHz stops the noise, but it returns, and the sample rate is then changed back to 41KHz by itself.

So, seems to be a bug in Apple's USB audio driver, but since they clearly have no intention of fixing it (or no idea how?), I was wondering if anyone's found a workaround that works - other than using the audio line outs!

Thanks!

I haven't noticed the dreaded "digital static" during any recording
projects, but lately I've been plagued by it during, of all things, simple
playback. As with Greg's issue in my case the problem tends to come on
gradually, also it appears at varying levels of intensity and frequency of
recurrence in different programs: mild in Toast, a bit more intense in
iTunes, and so frequent and intense in Amadeus (both II and Pro) that I'm no
longer able to use them.

As it seems unlikely the programs themselves are causing it (as they
couldn't all become independently afflicted at the same time), I am left to
wonder if the cause might be from QuickTime; the CPU; or perhaps even a
virus. Is it possible that QuickTime is not reserving adequate memory space
for itself?

I am working on a PowerPC G5, with 2gb of RAM, working primarily with
Amadeus II 3.8.6, under QuickTime 7.1.3. Most importantly, am not aware of
having changed ANY software between the time playback was working fine, and
when it began failing. (In fact the only change I can remember having made
was in my headphones, and as far-fetched as it might be for that to have
caused the problem, out of desperation I actually tested and found the
problem still present with my original headphones back in place.)

Has anyone else experienced anything like this; and/or have any thoughts on
what the cause might be?

Thanks very much,
