View Db Levels

Post by trevreav »

Hi, is there any way to view the Db levels in waveform view?
Just a quick scenario:
I have a recording of my band playing live and there are spikes in the drums which I'd like to tame, so using the Dynamics Compressor.
It would be very handy just to have a scale at the side of the main window to roughly indicate the Db levels, so you could see the general volume to start the compressor at.

TIA everyone.
Many thanks

If you have the 'Playback Controller' window open (Menubar: Window > Playback Controller) that would show you a graphic indication of db level during playback, which may be of help.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes, that’s what I’ve been doing but I would just find it easier if there was a guide down the edge of the track window.
Maybe switchable on/off for people who don’t want them. A bit like ‘rulers’ in graphic design programmes, Word etc.
Many thanks

I agree with trevreav. Pretty much every other audio production/editing app has a better implementation, from Audacity to Audition. Perhaps Audacity's is the best, as much as I find Audacity otherwise lacking. In a small footprint in Audacity has a wealth of info/usefulness. Audition's OK. isotope is pretty nice.

Once I gave up on my very old copy of Audition and refused Adobe's subscription I spent a considerable amount of time and effort testing everything I could get my hands on. Before purchasing Amadeus Pro I tested it, TwistedWave, and ocenaudio quite a bit. Both TwistedWave and ocenaudio have level meters along the side of the main window's display, optionally viewable. ocenaudio gives an extra option of a "mini" view and embeds a very small simple L/R channel volume display on top of the main view.

I decided on Amadeus Pro because it does so much for the right price. True, ocenaudio is free but kinda clunky in execution. TwistedWave is just a poor imitation of Amadeus Pro and costs so much more. Yet both do a much more elegant levels display, IMNSHO. ;)
