Please help with volume issues

Post by jbeede »

Hello,
I recently recorded a speech from the middle of the audience. The speaker's volume is fantastic. However, whenever the audience cheers or laughs, the audio is unbearably loud... so loud that it hurts the ears and ruins the listening experience. If I turn down the volume so that the laughter and cheering isn't too loud, it's hard to hear the speaker.

How do I set a maximum allowable volume across the entire file with Amadeus, or how do I solve this problem?

Thanks a TON.
John

You want something called a "dynamic compressor". Play around with the
"mda dynamics" plug-in or with Apple's AUDynamicsProcessor. Regards,

What you need is a compressor/limiter. It attenuates loud passages, so the difference between soft and loud becomes less.

First try "Effects>Audio Units>Apple>AUDynamicsProcessor" or "Effects>Audio Units>Apple>AUMultibandCompressor"
There are many variables, but unless you know what you are doing, stick to the factory presets. Listen with the preview untill you find what you want.

Another way is to do it manually with Amadeus' Envelope function (the blue line at the top of the soundwindow).

The choice of method depends on the recording. When the audience cheers just a few times, I would do it manually. When it is often, the compressor is quicker.
And combining two methods is always possible.

good luck
