Can anyone recommend a way to fix the following problem?

The Minidisc recorder I use defaults to automatic gain control (AGC) when recording. This is unsuitable for recording percussion, as the attack of the compressor is too slow for rapid, staccato sounds, resulting in a characteristic "pumping" or clipping effect. Does anyone know a tool or method of reducing these unwanted effects after a recording is made?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
