Normalize vs. Amplify
Sorry if my question is basic. I've read the manual and I'm still a bit unsure what to do. I'm trying to combine two audio tracks . . . one is very loud, the other very soft. What's the best way (losing the least quality) of bringing them to the same sound level?

Normalize vs. Amplify
As to the subject line -- normalize is just amplify to a specific
maximum rather than a particular amount. For example, if you normalize
to 99% of full scale, AP will calculate the maximum value of your
signal, figure out how much you need to amplify to make the signal 99%
and then amplify by that amount.
As a first try, I would normalize both tracks to 99% and see what
happens. If that is good enough, go with it. If it isn't, go to the
forums, search on "volume" and pick a post by me and you can get a very
complete discussion.
Note, before doing any of this, I would run "statistics" on your loud
track to make sure that you don't have clipped samples. Also, you might
want to check your quiet sample to see if there are a some outlier
points that are too large.
