I learnt about the lossless True Audio format recently when the audio player Vox started supporting it on OS X.

More info can be found on Wikipedia here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TTA_(codec)

I believe its compression rate may be slightly better than FLAC, which is why I'm interested in it. If VOX is now supporting it, I assume it's gaining in popularity. VLC and Windows Media Player also support it...

That's about all I info I have, I'm afraid.

The differences seem to be fair to moderate minimal from what I see on
the web. Depending on what you plan to do with the file, decoding time
may be a more important criterion.

I suspect that nothing will happen unless there is an open-source
routine to do the compression and possibly not then as it may not be
worth the adrenaline

Just had a quick look on the site of the developer. True Audio Codec looks good - and it's fully open source. The author promise that en- and decoding is in realtime. So maybe, Martin will give it a try?

Would someone (not directed at Jan!) explain exactly what this codec offers that existing lossless codecs do not? IOW, what need does this codec satisfy?

Why would one want to encode in real time? Why "encode" to play a file? "Decoding in real time," presumably means playing the file? That would be assumed, no?

Open source/non open source is only a red herring for users of this forum (and most others as well).

If I am missing something huge - and I may be - my apologies. But I would like to understand what may be the value of the codec.

Is there any problem at all with the decoding time of any existing lossless format?
Current computers are so fast, they are all many times faster than real-time...
Regards,

Martin
