Burned CD won\'t play

Post by CP Heaton »

Exactly how did they appear before?
System Preference is set for open with iTunes and that is what
happened. I was asked if I wanted to import. At present iMac thinks I
have inserted a blank disc. For two homemade discs burned by somebody
else, I insert and get message "The disc you inserted was not
readable by this computer."

Have you updated or changed iTunes recently?
No update. Don't like iTunes 11 and am sticking with 10. No iTunes
changes that I recall.
Changed finder preferences?
No changes. Finder pref is still set to show CDs & DVDs on desktop,
which does not happen now with Amadeus-burned CDs. iMac does not spit
discs out; it just ignores them.
When you played CD's in the past, did you play them with iTunes,
Quicktime, or something else?
They opened in iTunes and I played them in iTunes.

I use Toast Titanium a lot. It does not recognized Amadeus-burned CDs
as it used to (for disc copy purposes, for example). Toast continues
to recognize commercial CDs.

Amadeus-burned CDs are recognized and play just fine on wife's iMac.

I have used two different lens-cleaner discs.

Most online commentary I have seen is by people who burn CDs and then
the CDs won't play in car or CD player. Mine play in car with no
problems.

Thx for help on what does not seem to be an Amadeus problem. My guess
is that my CD/DVD drive is going bad.

CP

Hello_
Somehow your initial problem and my questions have been spread over several posts, so I hope you read here and will begin from before:

Got your preferences and history.

Now, to reiterate:

1. Your currently recorded Amadeus discs-***do they verify when burned?***

2. Your current ones do not play on your computer, nor your car, nor on your wife's computer?

3. Your older discs burned with Amadeus
A. Play in the car?
B. Your wife's computer?
C. They do not play in your computer?

5. Your friend's recorded discs play

A. Your car?
B. Your wife's computer?
C. Your computer?

So far it looks like the problem is with your computer, but your answers here may be telling.

Burned CD won't play

Actually, I strongly suspect is the reflection properties
  • commercial CDs read fine
  • the burned CDs play in other machines
thus the software on the computer reads a CD and can play it and the CDs are playable. I had to put an external CD drive on my wife's computer when her internal unit stopped reading. A very simple test is to burn a data CD and see if that can be read on the subject computer and on another computer.

Just to get one thing out of the way: "Commercial" (meaning here: non recordable) discs do have a higher reflectivity, so they are more easily read by older players, automobile players, or by players with failing light/optics/mechanics. However, I don't think that has anything to do with your situation.

I also think this has nothing to do with Amadeus. But perhaps we could narrow things a little more. I've noticed elsewhere your preference settings. BTW, recheck all of your preference settings for everything. (iTunes, Finder, etc.)

What happens now when you insert a "commercial" CD?

What happens now when you insert a blank CDR? It appears as a blank disc?

And inserting a recorded disc by Amadeus does what? It appears as a blank disc?

What happens when you insert a disc recorded some time ago with Amadeus?

Do you have a "stand alone" or car player? What happens with everything there?

And in any case, everything is perfect with your wife's computer?

Thanks, Chuck, but it would be really nice to hear from the OP, again in order to have things put out very systematically, and especially to find out if he verifies when he burns. That would give us some history and a trend. And if he's using different CD's, etc.

Playing an audio disc - commercial or CDR in a CD player - is a very different thing than reading data, or even playing an audio disc in a computer.. We need a little more info from him (the OP).

For the OP, if the problem is the drive - and it may be, just as Chuck has indicated - know that it is likely Apple's external drive will not work on Apple hardware that originally came with a drive, so you will require a third party if you want an external. And you could just get an external from a place that would take a return, plug it in, and see what happens.
