I am encoding some 96 kHz/ 24-bit sound files to MP3's with Amadeus Pro 1.5. I am using the advance option '--preset extreme' with 'overrides all other settings' checked. I notice that when I read the MP3 back into Amadeus, they show up as 48 kHz/16-bit files. I have a couple questions:
Does Amadeus pass the 24-bit data to lame or does it convert it to 16-bit first?
Also, I notice the following error messages in the Console. Is that an important error?
11/13/11 1:46:30 AM Amadeus Pro[4223] Set Samplerate: ??po
11/13/11 1:46:30 AM Amadeus Pro[4223] Set bitrate: ?ohw
11/13/11 1:46:30 AM Amadeus Pro[4223] Get bitrates error: 2003332927 '?ohw', change to 44.1kHz...
I am asking because, while the MP3 quality is decent, I find the original sounds noticeably better. I thought that the 'extreme' settings should produce pretty comparable sound so I am wondering if I am doing something wrong along the way.
Thanks

LAME MP3 encoding
Lame only takes 16-bit input. AFAIK, this is the same for every Mp3 encoder.Does Amadeus pass the 24-bit data to lame or does it convert it to 16-bit first?
No, that's harmless.
11/13/11 1:46:30 AM Amadeus Pro[4223] Get bitrates error: 2003332927 '?ohw', change to 44.1kHz…
You may want to use a lossless codec instead, like FLAC or Apple Lossless. Regards,I am asking because, while the MP3 quality is decent, I find the original sounds quite a bit better. I thought that the 'extreme' settings should produce pretty comparable sound so I am wondering if I am doing something wrong along the way.
