distortion sample

Post by Martin Hairer »

I even get this distortion if I normalize to 0 DBSPL using the Maximum Average power, or what ever it's called.
That's not surprising. As Chuck mentioned, if you use RMS power to normalise, you
should never normalise to something higher than about -15dB or thereabouts. The only
sure way to avoid distortion is to use "Maximal sample value".

With regards to the crashes, please update to version 2.0.3, this should be fixed there.
Regards,

Martin

Ray,

You are clipping -- no more no less -- any time you normalize to +6dB
peak you are going to clip.

You are starting with a mono file so I suggest
1) Convert track to stereo -- that way you know what is happening.
(not sure the command has the same name in AP 2, but there will be a
command like it.)
2) Normalize to peak position 0 dB (never greater than 0 dB unless
you know exactly why you are doing it)
3) Save as mp3.

If the average sound is quieter than you want, you can play with
compression -- audynamicsprocessor is one example -- see:
http://matthewnorwood.com/blog/?p=24
for some discussion. But I wouldn't worry about it for the recording I
heard sounded fine without it.

Hi,

Here are three files which will show what I get when I normalize an mp3 file.

Here's the Drop box link to the unprocessed original:

Now, here's the link to the .m4a Version:

Now, the mp3 file. This is the one with the distortion:

I even get this distortion if I normalize to 0 DBSPL using the Maximum Average power, or what ever it's called.
