Problem with recording from vinyl

Post by ddougan »

I just upgraded to 2.0 this morning and began recording today's batch of LPs. I have left the settings as they were previously (the status bar at the bottom left shows 32 bit, 44.1 kHz).

The problem is that I recorded one side of an album and when I pressed Stop, the recording disappeared - the Amadeus window is still there, but it has no content. I tried with part of the first track, thinking I had perhaps hit Cancel accidentally. The track stayed after pressing Stop, so I recorded the entire side again, with the same result as my first attempt. For whatever reason, the content is being discarded, with no warnings.

I am recording via an iMic into a MacBook Pro running 10.6.7. Version 1.x ran fine on the same system - which is what prompted me to upgrade when the notification came up this morning.

If you need any further information, please let me know.

Thanks,

Apologies for responding to my own post. I seem to have resolved the issue - I was checking the iMic settings and saw that it does not have a 44.1 kHz option - it has 48 kHz instead. I set this and it seems to be working.

Is the disappearance of the content without warning a bug, though?

I recommend converting to 44.1 Khz after recording, however, as many audio
applications (Toast, for instance) seem not to like any sampling rate other
than that.

Phil,

Thanks for your reply. After capturing with Amadeus, I import into iTunes - I don't plan to burn CDs, for example. Will that scenario necessitate a sampling conversion? (I must admit, I don't know what the impact of changing sampling rates is).

Thanks,

iTunes plays all sampling rates well for me, but I don't burn from there so
don't know what kind of results it's liable to produce.

Your best approach is to employ a little trial-and-error, with a brief
sample file. I only learned about this issue the hard way, from finding
certain tracks burned to CD completely ruined, and only gradually tracing
the problem down to using sample rates other than the 44.1 standard. From
this experience, I now very carefully check all sample rates before burning,
and change over those that don't comply.
