Check if stereo is really dual mono

Post by towb »

I have a stereo file that I suspect is really dual mono. How can I confirm that? With other software?

So far I'm doing this:

1. split track
2. invert phase of one
3. flatten document

It's rather slow, but I guess it would suffice if applied to only a few seconds.

Looks fine to me.
With a short selection it shouldn't take long.
Maybe automate the procedure into a batch processor?

Just a minute, in step 3 I think you mean Convert Track to Mono. Flatten Document changes nothing.

A simpler and quicker method would be

1 Effects>Stereo Utilities>invertPhase
2 Sound>Convert Track to Mono

When the track was double mono you hear nothing. When the track was stereo, you have an instant karaoke version. With no singer left in the middle.

Have fun
Gerard

I usually just use Waveform Statistics. If the two channels measure
identically (or even very close), I then collapse them into one, and proceed
from there.
