Why do "identical" files have different checksums?

Post by treefrog »

Just for fun I I did a test on how identical are two files when opened in APro and "saved as" again, with no changes applied. I tested the same with Peak Pro 6.

The two AIFF (uncompressed, 24*96) files' checksums are NOT IDENTICAL. This worries me a bit.

Can the reason be that the original file was saved on an earlier OSX?

Try reading them both in, flipping them and adding them and see what
happens. Remember, there is more than data in each file.

Sound data will be identical (unless it was compressed to start with).
Although metadata will also be identical in general, there can be small
differences in character encodings, etc, thus messing up the checksum.
