It's all a matter of taste & experimentation.
What I do these days is (recording voice only, for an audiobook) :

• Yohng W1 (for my normal voice and terrible microphone I use the settings: -10 / -5 / 100ms)
• Denoise & repair any cracks/clicks/breath etc (standard in Amadeus)
• Bittersweet (try your own settings)
• Normalize (to -0,5 & "maximal sample value" checked)

All free plugs (at:

http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.p ... W1-Limiter
http://www.macmusic.org/software/view.p ... tter-Sweet

and the usual Amadeus Normalize, under menu "effects")

Years ago I liked the "saturator" of Prosonic's SonicWorx, but this was in the days of Os-9. I don't know what they're doing now...

Have fun :-)
