Theoretically, if you have 4 iMics and a USB hub = 8 inputs?

Post by marsgrande »

I'm trying to find a cost efficient means of recording my band. I would like to have a minimum of 6 inputs/ tracks recording simultaneously.

My question pertains to this audio input device: http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic
-Can you plug a bunch of these (say 4 of them) into a USB hub and have the capabilities of a much more expensive stand alone multi track audio input device?

I found the following on another site. Does anyone have any idea if this would work? Sounds too good to be true.

In GarageBand, choose your new device from the input list and there you go! Theoretically, you can buy four iMics and an USB hub and you can have eight inputs -- but I don't know the maximum number of audio streams that can be used simultaneously over one USB channel. But, this is a lot cheaper than buying an eight-input device which can run up to $800. Enjoy!

To answer the question about USB and audio streams:
USB 1.1 (Or USB2.0 Full-Speed) should allow up to 6 channels of 48khz 24 bit audio, although that is using up the bus and if used often you may get drop-outs.

USB 2.0 High-Speed can get a lot more depending on the sampling rate and bit depth, but 16+ channels are possible. The same is true with Firewire 400, and of course more with Firewire 800.

Don't waste your money/time with http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic .

The quality is not there , i know because i bought one and now can't find anyone that would buy it and i sure don't want to pawn it off on the eBay.

Perhaps you could elabertate :

are you plannin to record those 6 tracks into a computer based audio recorder and is your computer fast enough to keep up to 6 recording tracks without chocking ? what is your computer you will be using for the recordings ?

or a dedicated hard disk recorder ?

or a dedicated tape recorder ?

do you have a mixing board and how many line and mic inputs can it handle ?

Let us know here and we can hopefully provide you with the information you need.

Your initial posting just provided a first step as to what you have in mind to do.
