Preference settings for opening audio files

Post by Amadeus »

Hi judging by the 'tick' in the Advanced tab in preferences Amadeus Pro is by default set up to open compressed audio files as 32 bit floats. If I download say a 24 bit flac audio file and open it in AP it shows the bit rate to be 32 so I presume the above preference setting is what's causing the bit rate not to appear as 24 bit. I also presume the file has been resampled in the process of opening it.

If I deselect the tick in prefences relating to 32 bit floats, do a restart then open the same flac file it still shows as 32 bit even though the tick in preferences has gone.

So, question is do I have a problem with the amendment to preferences I made not being recognised by OSX or do I need to make one or other preference changes within AP or OSX.

In the end all I want to do is get AP to open an audio file, recognise it's sampling rate (and depth) and maintain it so I see the file's correct figures in the bottom left hand corner of the sound window when it has been opened.

Thanks for any assistance!

PS running AP v2.1.7 (1576) and latest OSX Yosemite on a Macbook Pro (early 2015)

Hi, 24-bit file are always opened and processed as 32-bit floats for efficiency, this option really applies only to 8 and 16-bit files. There is no loss there at all. You are right however that the user interface is somewhat confusing, plus FLAC isn't really a compressed format at all anyway. The version at

fixes this behaviour. Note however that the difference is purely at the level of user interface: the bit depth displayed in the bottom left corner just gives an indication of how many bits are guaranteed to be preserved when saving to a lossless format with default settings. Internally, processing usually happens with 32-bit floats whatever is displayed there.
Regards,

Martin

Hi Martin thanks for the link and sorry for the delay responding what with moving and replacing my aging iMac lots to cope with! Think a good deal of the confusion has disappeared so will continue with a degree of confidence!
