split a multi-track file into segments

Post by lleifer »

I have imported a stereo recording that was made as dual mono by opening one .wav file, adding a track, opening the other mono file, copying and pasting it into the empty track. This works fine to hear the stereo as the tracks align perfectly. The problem is the session is larger than 2gb so I can not save the result out of Amadeus Pro 1.3.3 in a .wav or .aiff format. So I want to split the session into segments that I can save in a lossless format. But I cannot seem to select both tracks for copy or export simultaneously. I suppose a workaround would be to keep the same selection point and laboriously reproduce the whole process of track adding and pasting, segment by segment. But I'm not even sure I could keep the tracks synchronized while doing that or that this method would result in files that I could then burn down to CD-s as stereo.

Also, I can't use the "split by marker" function because the session already has many markers at relevant points for my purposes but far too many for splitting into useable segments at this point in my process. Am I missing some other way of doing this?

Hi, you should first use the “Tracks -> Merge with next track” function to turn your two mono tracks into one stereo track. It is then much easier to split it into pieces without unsyncing the two tracks.

You can also simply save the file as a CAF file, which is the successor to AIFF and has no size limitation. Regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Thanks for your suggestions. However, when I use the Merge with next track command, I no longer see left and right channels in the display so it appears to be a mono track that amounts to a merging of the left and right originals. In fact, the program sees the result as a mono track and the Sound Menu then offers the "Convert Track to Stereo" command. But if I use that command, will the resulting file truly have the original characteristics of each of the dual mono channels I began with? Or will they be some kind of extrapolated stereo, not the actual original two channels?

Also, saving as a CAF promises to lose me the markers, which I don't want to do.

Thanks for you attention and support!

Make sure that, before merging, the left track actually shows “left” in its playback menu (at the top right, just next to the small “gears” icon) and the right track shows “right”. Regards,

Martin
