I looked at the website for Ion Audio and can find nothing that bears
any resemblance to a specification. With the limited dynamic range of
tape, I have my doubts that any approach is likely to be much better
than any other.

Wow, that's a lot of trouble you've gone to,and i really appreciate it.

Some of the info is way out of my league but luckily a kind singer/song writer has agreed to help improve on the quality of the recordings i make...so your information will be very helpful.

I'm just not sure, after all that, whether the thinking was 'stick with the Ion to make the recordings' or buy an A/D box and use the bigger cd player (it sounds as though my plan to route the sound through the high quality cd player is not the way to go.)

all good wishes...

Thank you everyone for all your help. You have not just helped me but potentially many others too as the talks i am archiving are of a buddhist master teaching about finding peace and ease in the midst of life's complexity.
if it takes your fancy check out simplybeing .co.uk,and thanks again from the dharma.

Hi,

I don't have any personal experience with the Ion, but online reviews seem to be favourable. Also, keep in mind that personal audio has come a *long* way since the 80's, so even though you would probably get better results with a high-spec standalone tape player, I'd expect it to be perfectly decent.

When recording directly to Amadeus Pro with these devices, is mp3 the inevitable format and if so of what quality?

As far as I can see from the Ion's website, this should be recognised by
Amadeus like a normal audio input device, so you can save it in any format
you like. Regards,

Martin

Thank you all.
An update incase anyone tries to do something similar.

The final solution for me was to record directly into amadeus via a line into the macbook pro from my cd player, edit the talk, save as wave uncompressed 16 bit file, then use a dedicated sound restoration suite.

The noise of the motor made the recording via the Ion too difficult to improve, and our efforts using existing sound restoration software was not satisfactory.

P.S Thank you especially Martin...this editing software is so easy to use. I had been editing cds on a pc using a different puchased product, relative to this it was hard work.

Please allow me to share my method for transferring cassettes to mp3. I record from a TEAC audio cassette deck to a Marantz CD recorder. This allows an easy way to adjust recording levels. Once burned, I insert the CD into my Mac and open it with Amadeus. With Amadeus, I separate the one or two long files into individual tracks, which I then transfer into iTunes.
