Forum list digest spam

Post by Bull »

Good afternoon,

Lately my digests have had an increasing amount of spam included. I just received a lengthy one that was, I believe, 100% spam. I say "I believe" because if there was any content, I couldn't find it.

Is there any way to stifle these people? Doesn't one have to be a registered member of the group to post messages?

Is your web site the only alternative the digests?

I have now added a setting that allows me to moderate new topics. This will unfortunately also slow things down for legitimate users since their posts will now require manual approval the first time around, but let's see how this goes… Regards,

Martin

Probably a good move. Delay is not nice, but better than constant kitchen converter messages.

Thank you Martin!

If there is a setting just to moderate new users, I know I've found that to eliminate most of the issues on lists I manage.

Best of luck and as always, your efforts are greatly appreciated!

There is no such setting, but it is easy to make a user "auto-approved" I have already done this for the most frequent posters of the forum and it seems to work fine.

I am not sure yet how this moderation thing interacts with the forum <-> mailing list gateway, I suppose we'll see tomorrow… Regards,

Martin

Martin,

Thank you for taking this in hand. This group has been a great help to me personally.

Sorry to say that spam reduction is not working yet

Got three spam messages today
one from daveblast7 who, according to the member list, joined today.

Hope you find a way to catch the spammers before they get inside.
Good luck
Gerard

That seems close to impossible since I suspect that they use actual humans
to post the messages.

The moderation thing actually works fine on the forum, the problem
is just that the bit that links the forum to the mailing list posts the message to
the list before they go through moderation. I'll see if I can tweak the code by hand
so that messages get forwarded to the list only after they pass moderation…
Regards,

Martin

OK, the moderation now seems to work correctly. I am sorry for the blank emails you got, there was something I hadn't quite understood about the forum's code ;-) I might send out one more test email from the forum just to make sure everything works. Regards,

Martin
