Best Effect to Use: Transistor Radio? Telephone?

Post by kboasso »

I've looked through the forums & haven't seen this one. If someone already addressed it, my apologies.

I have a particular wave file, and I want to apply an Audio Unit (or other device) so it sounds as if it's coming from a transistor radio.

The best example I can come up with (although this is not exactly what I'm looking for) is the segue from "Have a Cigar" to "Wish You Were Here" on Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" album where the music is sucked into a transistor and then the station is changed.

Another way to describe what I'm looking for is as if I'm listening to the sound over a (low-quality) telephone line.

The result I'm looking for is to make my wave sound a bit more tinny, flatter, without body.

Is there a straightforward way to do this?

Thanks!!!

Can you just put a filter on it and cut all lower frequencies or
attenuate them?

Thanks for the suggestion, CD.

I tried the AUHiPass filter to cut / attenuate the low end, and it almost gets me to where I want to be.

Problem is it cuts volume too far down; when I re-amplify, then the resulting sound is still to "rich" or "full."

If there's another / better way to cut the low end, I'm game to try...

Thanks...

I don't have AP on the computer I am working with -- try looking at the
spectrum of the original signal and use the 12-band attenuator and just
move up the frequency. Try to pass everything greater than 250 hz.

I will try to play with it this evening and see what I can do.

AUHiPass does the trick quite nicely for me. I set it at 1000 Hz and 12 dB resonance.
A subtle phasing effect could add to the "radio" atmosphere.

Maybe there is a speaker emulator plug in that can do this trick.

Perhaps run the same filter two or three times ...

Wow!

Thanks, all!!!

These are some great ideas. I've tried a couple of them and have some additional mixing & adjusting, but I'm certain I'll get to where I want to be.

Thank you all very much!
