how to extarct autofocus motor noise from audio file

Post by angelman »

Any suggestions on the best way to extract or suppress the autofocus motor noise from the audio I have taken from a video, if possible.

Do you have a clean sample of the autofocus noise? If so, see if there
are discrete frequencies that you can pull out. You can also try the
denoising algorithm -- I think in theory it should work but in practice,
you may just be able to decrease it. (I am assuming it is a variant of
the Wiener algorithm,)

Correct. It may work pretty well if the noise sounds "constant"...

settings

Post by angelman »

Thanks for quick reply.
I have reduced it quite a bit using these settings Short FFT, smooth, sensitivity 60%. the voice is a bit more guttural but who can understand an aussie accent anyway.
Any suggestions on further improvement . say; If I amplify it all use the settings and drop it back?
I may put in some background music too. I personally find the noise really annoying. I hate fridge noises too.
Would this mean the camera is not so good. thanks again.

I doubt if amplifying anything is likely to help. Background music is
always an option. On CarTalk they always talk of turning the radio up
louder to drown out a noise.

I would guess that it says nothing about the camera; you just
shouldn't use a mike on a camera with autofocus. You might find that if
you used a cardiod mike and moved a foot or 2 from the camera, the noise
would go way down. Remember every time you see a live news feed on TV,
they have mikes plastered right in the face of the speakers and the
cameras a distance away.

camera microphone

Post by angelman »

I know this is off topic but does the microphone have be plugged in to the camera to synch the sound and video. there is no external mike jack on it. Guess I will have to research this.

In this wonderful digital age you can use two independent camera's or a camera and a digital soundrecorder and sync the sound afterwards in iMovie or another editor.
Even 90 minute recording show up perfectly in sync from start to finish. Probably has to do with timecode or something.
Coming from the analog tape age this is like magic to me. ;-)

If cash is not a problem, invest in a microphone/recorder like one of the Zoom recorders. (Or a better camera)

+1. And I recently read an announcement of H2n (or something like that) with 5 mics
that's supposed to be in the same-ish price range.

In my experience the easiest is the old iMovie HD (version 6).
But it can be done in any video editor.
