Amadeus Pro 2 - Not winning me over

Post by Balzypipes »

I'm a BIG fan of Amadeus. I promote it to other voice actors often. Both in person and online. I know for a fact that a lot of folks use Amadeus based on my recommendation. So I'm surprised to find how much I'm not liking the 2.0.1 upgrade.

1- All my voice tracks have pops and crackles in them at all bit rates except 16.

2- The screen is kind of jerky. Zooming in or out is not fluid, it appears to be a lot slower redrawing the screen. Scrolling is slow as well.

3- When I select something and change the volume via "amplify" then try to click in the middle of the selection to cut a piece out of it, it begins playing and selecting everything that plays.

4- I keep the "Actions" window open all the time because I do a lot of repetitive processes. Under "Favorite Actions" when I double click on something it performs the process of the last used favorite action and not the one I double clicked on. So, I have to click on one of the favorite actions, then use the up and down arrows to get to the one I want and THEN double click on it.

I have every confidence this will get better, but I'm seriously thinking about re-installing an older version. This one just isn't fast enough yet.

Hi,
1- All my voice tracks have pops and crackles in them at all bit rates except 16.
That's *really* strange, I never heard of this problem. Are you talking about tracks
that you *record* at bitrates other than 16 or tracks that you *open* at bitrates other
than 16? Also, is the problem just playback (i.e. does it play back fine in QuickTime
for example) or is it really the sound data?
2- The screen is kind of jerky. Zooming in or out is not fluid, it appears to be a lot slower redrawing the screen. Scrolling is slow as well.
Hmmm.... On my two and a half year old MacBook Pro I cannot see the difference
between the two.
3- When I select something and change the volume via "amplify" then try to click in the middle of the selection to cut a piece out of it, it begins playing and selecting everything that plays.
When you click and drag into a selection, the new version drags the selection.
I will add an advanced preference allowing to change this behaviour to revert
to the old one.
That seems to be a small interface quirk, I'll fix this for version 2.0.2. Thanks for
the feedback,

Martin

REPLY: Ah ha! I found it. It is only when using the higher bit rates and processing eq. (Using the Apple 10 band eq) And Yes, it is in the file and crackles when played back in QT. I can record at 16 and process the eq without crackles.

REPLY: I switched to a new computer just before I upgraded to 2.0
I used the "Clone Drive" so the new computer should have exactly the same settings as the old one. BOTH are iMac 2.16 ghz machines and are basically identical except the new one has a 24" screen and more ram. Don't know if any of that plays a part but the reaction time is a little like watching a satellite news interview on tv. Everything has a slight delay to it.

Thanks for your prompt attention Martin. I really appreciate that!
Sincerely,
Corky Coreson

Have you tried using the "Activity Monitor" to see if some other program is
using lots of CPU time / disk access? (For example, when Spotlight indexes
your drive, such things may happen especially if you are working on a large
file that is cached on the drive instead of in RAM.) Regards,

Comments on AP 2

Post by CDJonah_alt »

I have been following this discussion and will comment, whether it makes
sense or not.

I think it was unfortunate that the new version had the same name as the
previous version. I never update from the menu. I download the updated
version, rename the previous version by adding the version number and
then make sure that everything is still working. In the days AII, I had
both 1.28 and 1.55 running at once as I had some recording problems with
versions later than 1.28.

When AP came out, I stayed with AII for probably more than a year until
I had jobs that were really helped by AP. After all, I knew all the key
strokes and could work faster. I probably will do the same with AP II

And users -- some of you have been very helpful in giving specific info
to help fix the program. As a programmer myself, I know how annoying it
is to be told just "it doesn't work" with no details or "I got some
error message" but no idea what the error message is. Some, on the other
hand, just don't give enough information to do anything. To say the
program crashes too often is not useful. What was it doing when it crashed.

I am wondering if this EQ problem is related to the noise suppression problem I noted: http://www.hairersoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1428

In each case, it seems like the program is having a problem running filters on higher bit rate recordings. And in each case, crackling/popping is resulting.

I haven't noticed the other issues Balzypipes has brought up, because I never got past the noise suppression bug into actually recording/editing more than a line or two. Like Balzypipes, I use AP for voiceover work. I have switched back to 1.5.5 for now and will stick with that until all the bugs are worked out of 2.x.

Hi, could you please give the version at

http://www.hairersoft.com/Downloads/AmadeusPro.zip

a try? This should work now. If not, could you please send me a sample
file with instructions on how to reproduce the problem? Thanks,

Martin
