How (or can) you drag the phayback head?

Post by ericp »

I am new to Amadeus Pro, but not to audio editing. I used Wave Lab for years, but no longer have access to it, and so was looking for an inexpensive alternative. I first learned to edit using mag tape. Question? How can you edit without the ability to drag the playback head? Am I missing something? Does version 2.0 allow this?

Every version allows you to drag the playback head by clicking in the
timeline below the waveform. (You don't have to click exactly onto the
playhead, it will automatically move to where you click.) Regards,

Martin

I think Eric P's reference to "mag tape" means that what he's looking for is scrubbing the audio back and forth - like we used to jockey the tape reels back and forth - to whoop - poohw - whoop zero in on a particular sound. It's an old habit from tape editing that dies hard and in my experience the only audio program (short of ProTools) that came close to tape scrubbing was the long gone Sound Designer II.

That "old habit from tape editing" allows two things: rapid location of exact sounds without cluttering with markers, and, more importantly, the creation and modification of sound effects by hand, by dragging the head at varying speeds.

It's no huge deal, I was just asking.

My 10 years of digital sound editing were with two versions of Steinberg Wave Lab, which did allow this.

Actually, I was impressed with your product because it was so much like Wave Lab that I could instantly. And, at a bargain price1

I find a good substitute for "rockin' the hubs" to be the gradual
minimization of the selection area, first by shortening it, via repeated
playbacks, from both the left and right of the target spot, and then
shortening only from the left, leaving the target spot exactly at or quite
near the beginning of the selection.
From there the target spot can be brought into full view (highest zoom
level) in just two keystrokes: cmd-y, to bring the cursor to the beginning
of the selection, and cmd-j, to zoom in on and center it.

Once you get this technique down I think you'll find it very similar to hub
rocking, and quite effective at quickly and accurately locating a target
spot and bringing it front and center.

I hope this helps some,
--Phil M.

Phil,
I came up with my own clunkier version of what you describe, but without your ingenious addition of the keystrokes. Will definitely start using that.

Eric, I certainly didn't mean to disparage hub-rocking - or dragging over the heads - when I called it an "old habit." I've worn out my share of EdiTall blocks since I first started cutting tape back in the '60's. And how about spilling tape onto the floor or into a box or slinging the pieces of tape over my neck to have them available in case they need to go back in. I'd come home and my wife would pick pieces of splicing tape off my jacket lapel calling it "the other woman."

One feature in Amadeus Pro that I've found to be a real champ is the one-stroke preview for an edit. Select what you want to cut out, press "e" and it will play the edit. If you like it, just pull out the selection (delete or cmd-x). If not, adjust the selection and "e" again.

OK, just out of curiosity: How many people have spliced tape (other
than as an historical excercise)? Raise your hands.

I'm very guilty.

I'm guilty too - a little :) I learned it from a broadcast-professional when I was 16. It's long time ago ...

It must be buried in some drawer, I did have a tape splicer. Mostly made tape loops with it. Never been a professional editor.

Hand raised. From circa 1980, most recently a couple of years ago (re-splicing radio station archive reels such that all the sticky shed tape was on one reel [for baking] and the non-sticky-shed pieces on a different reel). The MCI JH-110C is still hooked up in the other room (main audio system), and last i checked is still working.

My personal best was something like one complete edit per minute for a few hours, assembling one of those "flying saucer" parody tapes, made up of song bits. This would have been in 1995. (I missed most of the party for which the tape was made.)

Started messing with digital on a MacRecorder on a Mac Plus in the late '80s, but didn't really start working in digital with any regularity until about 1998 or 1999, when i found Amadeus II version 3.0.1 (or close to that) to be the best option at the time for my OS 8 Power Mac 8600/300 (which to this day is the DAW workstation computer).

I too have sinned, in fact was a tape specialist, or "tape collagist", in
several bands and also solo during the 1980s. My tapes were ultimately used
from a Fostex X-15 four-track cassette deck, but many were initially created
on open-reel, with lots of splicing (sometimes, in fact, quite randomly, for
that Gysonian "cut-up" effect) and looping, the loops sometimes flowing
across door handles and lamp posts around an entire room. All this nonsense
was quite fun while it lasted, but I can't say I really miss it.
