Nasty Buzz when burning CD in Toast

Post by Anglo »

I'm recording LPs. The last couple I did, having split tracks, I tried to burn in Toast, but I get this really nasty buzz, in playback from Toast, and on the CD. The tracks play back clean when opened with Amadeus.

The buzz seems to modulate with the strength of the audio signal.

If I record in Audacity, I don't seem to have a problem. Older Amadeus files are fine too. It's just what I'm doing now.

I'm using Mac OS 10.4.11, Amadeus Pro 1.5.2, and Toast 8.

Any ideas? I'm baffled.

Are you saving the files as mp3s before passing them to Toast? If so,
that is the problem. The sampling rate is altered in an mp3 and Toast
doesn't do a good job of resampling back to 44.1 khz. I find that if I
want to burn an mp3 using toast that it works best if I open the file up
in Amadeus and save as aif.

Could the buzz be distortion? The sound somehow becoming too loud in Toast?

Gerard

No, everything is aif all along the line.

Might want to check the sample rate in Amadeus. I have never had
trouble with that particular combination.

What are the *precise* settings you use when saving the AIFF file?
Maybe they are compressed or big-endian and Toast doesn't like that?
Regards,

Martin

Uncompressed, 44.1 KHz

The same as I've used for a long time.

What I really don't understand is why this started happening now - AFAIK I have changed no settings at all, and everything was working just fine.

I _so_ prefer Amadeus to Audacity.

I would reload the file that is giving trouble and check the settings of
that file. Also, what happens if you open the file in audacity and
resave. Does that fix things.

I did open a bad file in Audacity, exported as aiff, tried it in Toast and it was still bad.

I'm now getting totally confused as I'm trying different things in the sound preferences and I'm not sure where I'm at. Now Audacity seems to be doing funny things. I haven't used it for so long I've forgotten how it works.

The thing that's really strange to me is that the files play back correctly in Amadeus, it's only when I put them into Toast that they do the buzzy distortion thing (It actually sounds to me like a buzz superimposed on an original sound, rather than a distorted original, though the buzz is loud enough that it's hard to tell).

And they play perfectly well imported into iTunes, and when converted to mp3.

But I can't see that it's a Toast problem, since other files do perfectly well there.

I'm not very computer savvy. Could something have got corrupted, and should I try a reinstall of Amadeus? Is there a protocal for this?

Could you give me the length of one file in minutes and its length in
bytes, kilobytes, megabytes. Click on the file and use the "get info"
command (command I) in the finder in bytes. (I want the real number of
bytes in the file and not the finder number that displays).

Thanks Chuck. Sometimes I think this thing is in my head because I can't find anything wrong.

This one is a short file of 00'30". (I see 00'30"416).

Info says 2.6 MB (2,682,962 bytes)

You are not sampling at 44.1 khz -- If you were, you would have
approximately 5 Mbytes and you have only about half that. (Simple rule
of thumb is 10 Mbytes per minute -- not exactly right but close
enough). This is, I assume, stereo. I have no idea what Toast would do
with mono.

BRILLIANT!!!

That's it.

I have always saved straight into aif without thought, and it seemed the default was 44.1, but somehow that got changed. Now to save I have to go through the options box and check resample, at 44.1, because otherwise it gives me 22.050, which caused my problems.

I don't even know where to save the default. But you have found the source of my problem.

THANK YOU ! ! !

I don't know how you are recording, but I suspect something got mis-set
in the record dialog. It is recording at 22.05 so that is what Amadeus
uses. Once you let "us" know how you are recording, I am sure someone
else can tell you what setting needs to be altered.
