Add vinyl hiss and pop

Post by swizzir »

I need to add hisses and pops to a track to make it sound like it's a vinyl recording. Is this possible with Amadeus? Maybe with a VST or AU plugin? Thanks.

SFX Machine RT is an Audio Unit which can do this (and has many other effects):

It's currently available at a discount price of $49

Very realistic vinyl crackles can be recorded before, between and after songs on an oldfashioned record player. ;-)

Google allows you to easily find free but professionally executed Audio Units for pretty much all of these "basic" effects. Here is a (far from exhaustive) list.

For adding vinyl pops and hiss, see:

http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/v ... wnload.asp

All sorts of spectral effects (including chorus) can be obtained here:

http://www.michaelnorris.info/soundmagi ... index.html

Another bunch of effects, including flanger, chorus and phaser, can be obtained here:

http://www.bluecataudio.com/Products/Bu ... ewarePack/

An excellent reverb is freeverb, available here (scroll down the page):

Note that SFX Machine PRO is buggy and will crash current versions of Amadeus Pro. I have reported this to their development team and they are looking into it. Regards,

Martin

I'd tried a demo of the Sound machine RT plugins with AP, and another thing you might want to take up with the developers, this was true in the demo, but may not be in the full version, there are sliders that you can use to taylor the effect you want to use. At least in demo mode, these weren't visible to Voiceover. Not sure if this is true with a full licensed version or not, but that's something you might mention to them as well. .
Most plug-in developers use GUI packages that allow to reuse the same code to build various plug-in formats, like Audio Units, VST plug-ins, etc on various systems (Windows, Mac OS, Linux). Therefore, they cannot use any standard MacOS X system controls. As a consequence, I am afraid that most Audio Units will always be "opaque" to anything like Voiceover.

It's not that it's impossible: Apple's Snow Leopard Audio Units all have Cocoa user interfaces, so I assume that they "play nice" with Voiceover, but of course Apple has little incentive of supporting other platforms.

One thing you can do is type

defaults write com.HairerSoft.AmadeusPro HSGenericAUView 1

in the Terminal. This tells Amadeus Pro to discard custom user interfaces and to present a "standard" interface instead. These interfaces don't usually look nice (they are usually just a bunch of sliders), but should play nice with Voiceover. Regards,

Martin
