Help - does anybody have a way of opening OMF files on a Mac

Post by Alastair Nisbet »

My friend Mickey has some music files which have been sent to him in OMF format - created by some African musicians on very old equipment.

Is there any way I can open these in Amadeus ?

Your advice much appreciated.

This site:
http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/omf
lists four programs which will open them - unfortunately all expensive.

Since ProTools is listed, i'm thinking ProTools Free 5.0.1 for OS 9/PPC may very well be able to access those files. I have never tested this theory. It may be easier and less expensive to get ahold of an older Mac which will boot into OS 9 and PT Free than to deal with these other versions/programs. I know PT Free insists upon having Avid OMS extension(s) present and active, and i believe OMS and OMF are related.

OMS was from Opcode, which was trashed by Gibson.

Pro Tools (all versions) requires DigiTranslator to deal with OMF.
Unfortunately it is not free. OMF is an AVID/Digidesign format. I
haven't seen any free translators.
