Removing tape hiss

I tried to create a simple audio file to let me experiment with this issue, but what I got wasn't what I thought it was. I created a track 10 s worth of 400 Hz sine wave at 50%. I generated another track of white noise at 2%. I then merged the two tracks. Sure enough, it sounds like a nice tone with...

Thanks Chuck for your insight on recording at low levels and then normalizing. I played around with that for a bit and, at least qualitatively, think you're right. How about that other useful trick (to avoid distorting the useful signal when suppressing hiss)? Is there any science behind this, or ar...

pm said "I get good results by recording at a deliberately low level -- low enough that you're certain not to clip -- and then Normalizing later." I haven't opened my DSP textbook in a while, but it seems to me that recording at a low level gives up a lot of data, sort of like sampling at ...

Mp3 from cassette tapes

I've been converting cassette tapes to mp3 for quite a while. I use a good quality cassette player connected to my Mac Mini from Headphone out to the Audio Input. JackPilot.app redirects the audio to Amadeus Pro. The biggest headache is getting the levels right to avoid clipping. Usually I have to p...

Another data point

I did another long recording with the MacBook in the same state as before except Time Machine was off, and had no problems. So, either Time Machine was the culprit or something else was at work.

Save file while recording?

With respect to the dropped audio in the recording: I had selected the option to save the file to disk while recording. Assuming it was that process that Time Machine interfered with, would I have been better off not selecting that option?

Yes, Time Machine was doing hourly backups. I didn't time it but the recording was good for a while, then a series of drops. Maybe ... every hour or so? I'll try it again with Time Machine off. Thanks for the info.

Drops in recording

Good morning, I recently recorded a multi-hour program, and find on playback that there are several places where a second or two of the input stream has been dropped. That is, the recording is continuous but lacks the few seconds of content. The problem is I don't know where the problem originates. ...

Disregard. They have a 64/32 bit version, I missed that.

JackPilot & Lion

Good morning, I just started using OS X 10.7.2. In the past I have relied on JackPilot to pipe audio from different applications to Amadeus Pro. However, in Lion I can't. What I see is: JackPilot starts up fine. System Preferences > Sound: No JackPilot listed either outputs or inputs. As a result, J...

Actually, \" was needed in the AppleScript, just not in TextWrangler. Better safe, as you say.

PS After you have modified the Cue sheets to be just a list of the tracks, you can number the tracks. Open the modified file in TextWrangler, Text Menu "Add/Remove Line Numbers" and, as our cousins in England say, Bob's your uncle. You can also add this step to the AppleScript application ...

Here is an automated version of Martin's suggestion. If you have TextWrangler, in the menu bar you should see a scroll icon in the menu bar two to the left of the Help menu. Click on that and select "Open Script Editor". In the new window, type or paste these lines (between the two --- lin...

I agree with Martin that you should be able to work with the "Export markers" file. I use AppleScript + BBEdit rather than TextWrangler. It allows me to break up long, continuous audiobooks into hundreds of short files of short duration separated at periods of silence in the original. If y...
