I had already tried m4a at 128 kbps.
I have since got the recording to work by removing the genre and placing it into a different playlist. This is all very strange.
My conclusion is that there is a problem with either itunes or my ipod, although I am not an expert in these matters.

Recording on ipod does not function
I recorded a radio show from the internet to listen to on my ipod a few weeks ago. The recording works fine in itunes. However, it fails to transfer to my ipod.
