Re: Audiobook Recording For ACX

Martin gives good salient advice - start with the space and the quality of the recording. If the core audio is bad, it's very, very difficult to fix afterwards. I master and narrate audiobooks for a living. Here are some other points. Raw recordings should be done in uncompressed audio file formats ...

Combine effects for repeated tasks

All the Apple AU's are stock plug-ins which come with any system. AU = Audio Units, an apple plug-in standard (others are VST, AAX) You could use the AU Graphic Equalizer if you prefer that type of interface. All the Amadeus "X-band Equalizers" are Graphic EQ's.  You could do multiple passes with d...

That was supposed to be helpful.  "Audio Units Rack" is a core function in Amadeus Pro.  It's the process by which you combine multiple AU Effects into a single step.  You could then automate that tool with a keyboard equivalent at the Apple System level. All of which is described in greater detai...

How to equalise loudness across a number of voice recordings

Most Normalize processes work with either Peak (not Peak RMS) which is the loudest single wave in the file.  They can also be set to Normalize by RMS (in AP, it actually says it does so with the Maximal RMS - most use Average).  In either case if you change one, it changes the other by the same am...

LUFS / RMS are the current standards, depending upon your field.  Youlean Loudness Meter is a good free AU plugin https://youlean.co/youlean-loudness-meter/ Jim Edgar VO:  JimEdgarVoices.com  |  @jimedgarvoices  | Source-Connect -  jimedgarvoices For audio/studio help:  JustAskJimVO.studio  ...

How to equalise loudness across a number of voice recordings

RMS is a better way to balance. Peak is simply the loudest single cycle (wave) in the file. One loud click could throw things off if you are normalizing by Peak. Using stock plugins, you could use the limiter and then normalize down to a reasonable level. Typical RMS targets for audiobooks are -18 t...

Spoken Word Audiobook Settings

I generally don't recommend the various Leveler plug-ins for audiobook work.  I've used them a few times for wrangling podcast interviews which tend to have wildly varying levels. But for audiobooks, they can cause noise floor issues.  And generally the performance is much more controlled - both ...

MacOS Catalina 64-bit

While the application is 64 bit, you should be mindful that almost every audio software company has advised not to upgrade immediately. Unless Catalina is mission-critical for your business (which is reasonably unlikely), it might be a better strategy to let others do the beta testing... ;^) Here's...

Exception errors on OS Catalina

Over the past few weeks, there have been all kinds of warnings from Audio manufacturers to not implement the update to Catalina.  Here's a good article as to why: https://www.pro-tools-expert.com/production-expert-1/2019/9/18/macos-catalina-compatibility-why-it-might-take-pro-audio-and-music-softwa...

Recording LPs with greater bit depth and higher sample rate

Kurt -  Focusrite definitely records in 44.1. Should be able to change that in the Apple Audio MIDI Setup utility. What version of the Scarlett do you have? They just updated to G3 and there have been a few odd things I've encountered.  Ahh - Didn't think of the pop/click thing.  I'd probably jus...

Recording LPs with greater bit depth and higher sample rate

Hey Kurt -  In digital recording, there is no benefit from approaching -0 dB (peaking). Nor is there any real benefit from mastering to the nth level. Leave some headroom. Hopefully, the albums were originally well mastered so that the relative loudness between tracks is appropriate. The iterative ...
