Gain control

Post by jimbo1421 »

Hello,

I am finally getting back to my vinyl conversion project with Amadeus Pro. I am using an iMic into a MacBook Pro. It seems that the gain control sliders actually work in increments of 3 db and jump from 6.0 db to 9.0 db. The upper level results in a lot of clipping, the lower level seems too low. I think I am correct that the recording level should be as high as possible without clipping; 7 or 8 db would be about right but doesn't seem to be available. Am I missing something? Is this a hardware limitation? Is there another way to get a 1-2 db higher recording level?

That depends on the hardware / driver. Some don't allow any gain
control at all, some allow smooth control, and some allow only for a
few increments.

You are correct in principle, but recording 2 or 3 dB lower than the
absolute optimal is good practice anyway, since otherwise there's a
good chance of having some clipping. It is very easy to normalise
afterwards. The quality of most recordings is anyway by very far not
good enough to try to squeeze out the last dB of dynamic range. Regards,

Martin

Thanks, Martin. You're probably right.

Now on to the next question...
