Pitch Correction

Post by sambrown »

I want to 'pitch-correct' some aiff files I have exported from my Alesis HD24. I see Amadeus has a plug-in called "Apple AUPitch" which might be just what I need. However, I would like to know what all the parameters mean and do. Do you know if this plug-in has a 'manual'? Is there a more simple solution? Perhaps importing the file into garage band and tweaking it there.... Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

If by pitch correct, you mean shift the frequency of an entire track, I
think aupitch will do that -- then of course there is also a built-in
pitch shifter in Amadeus -- don't know which is better

No, what I need is something intelligent which will correct the tuning of individual notes played by a duff sax player. There's software like 'melodyne' out there, but it's a bit costly. I would just like to know what all the parameters in AUPitch do in case it will do the same job.

AUPitch is not "intelligent" in the sense that it will simply shift
the pitch of the whole sound by the specified amount. I do not know of
anything other than Melodyne for that sort of job. Regards,

Martin

Simply select the passage you wish pitch correct, open Effects>Change
Pitch and Speed... and tweak til cooked. I just tested and it only
effects the selection.

Don't forget Antares Auto-Tune...

I tried the Auto-Tune 5 plug-in with Amadeus using the free 10-day trial, and I got amazing results on sax tracks and vocal tracks with a combination of Automatic Mode and Graphical Mode. It's very good at detecting and tweaking pitches, especially when the audio is well-isolated from other noise. Auto-Tune has some bugs using Amadeus as its host application, as I recall, but nothing too fatal. Unfortunately, like Melodyne, it's not cheap if you want to keep using it after the 10-day trial period: $400. :(

For the adventurous, there's a novel internet service that will pitch-correct your vocal tracks within 24 hours at $40 per 5-min track: www.vocaltuning.com (Not that this helps Sam with his sax tracks. But if one were doing a rush job and just needed a single vocal track fixed, outsourcing might be cheaper than buying Auto-Tune or Melodyne. I'd personally have a hard time trusting a stranger to pitch-correct my tracks, but that's probably just me being a Type-A personality.)

Cheers,
Tristan
