Martin Hairer wins Fields medal

Post by mattn »

The Fields medal is like the Nobel prize, but harder to win. It is Very Serious Stuff. This is awesome. Congratulations to you, Martin. Oh, and thanks for doing Amadeus on the side. - matt

Extraordinary!

Congratulations, Martin, on a really important achievement and the lasting recognition of the best in your field.

[ I have just caught up with this. When I saw the reports a couple of months ago I did not make the connection, until I saw the story in Quanta: late! Like others I was surprised by the misinformation in the story on JPEG compression.

Great fame (and I suppose some fortune) follows the Fields Medal. I hope that Martin will still find time for Amadeus Pro. But whether he does or not I'm very happy for him.]

JPEG2000 does actually use wavelets. (I have that information first hand from Ingrid Daubechies and she of all people should know…) Mp3 certainly doesn’t use wavelets and, for various reasons, I don’t think that wavelets are appropriate for sound compression.

What probably happened is that I mentioned to Natalie (the author of that article) that wavelets are used in image compression and in sound processing and she mixed both things up. Regards,

Whoa- I had the same reaction, re: "wonder if he's related to the Amadeus guy". I suppose he is : )

I was having dinner with David Mumford (another winner for those who don't follow it closely : ) a while back as part of a faculty position interview. I asked him if he ever just wore it around to impress the ladies. Maybe out in the Brown Math Department Faculty Hot Tub (no postdocs or grad students allowed, of course).

Amazingly, I still got the job offer...

Anyway- may you wear it out and about, proudly! Congratulations!

I never thought about doing that, but now that you mention it… ;-)
