I was disappointed the other day, when trying to read a bunch of wma files intending to convert them to m4a format: Amadeus would simply not read them… the fact that flip4mac wmv [the windows media components for QuickTime] are installed doesn't seem to matter… even though the wmv software actually lets QuickTime open any wma file;

come on: what prevents Amadeus from reading those files, since it's supposed to be able to get any data that QuickTime can open?

sadly enough, I had to throw away my Amadeus copy and use a dusty 2-year old release of TwistedWave instead to do the job…

Your system's probably hosed. Amadeus opened wma files for me with no problem a couple of years ago when I needed to.

It should work, you can even save in the WMA format. Could you send me one of these files?
Thanks,

Martin

no, my system isn't messed up: I can tell because I've got some other wma files that Amadeus 3.2 could read fine, back in 2006, and can still open without a hitch in 2012

I've uploaded a handful of culprits on http://supports.p8.free.fr/2012/wma_files/

thank you for squashing this one!

Well, when you don't give any context and start apportioning blame I just assume the worst case.

just a reminder: you don't actually need to quote posts that are just above yours; it only serves to clutter the thread, and it's useless;

It is nevertheless convenient for people reading the threads by mail.
But I'm getting used to not quote.

I use a mail client, not the web forum. Different strokes for different folks. Just a reminder.

My copy of AP 2.0.5 opened one, banga.wma, but the window has no wave form and AP reports the length (in seconds) of the file as zero. The Finder's Get Info says it is 12.6 MB on disk.

Saving as an .aiff results in a file with a tiny click sound and the file size (from AP) is 54 bytes.

thank you: so there's no error message, but the data isn't read properly; yet this opens (and reads) smoothly in rogue amoeba fission, for instance!

The files are WMA lossless rather than usual lossy WMA files. It looks like the library that Amadeus Pro uses to open them doesn't support this format. From what I can see at

http://ffmpeg.org/trac/ffmpeg/ticket/1000

this was recently fixed, I'll see if I can recompile the new version of the library. Regards,

Martin
