Function request - track levels

Post by rfwilmut »

The new sound level line is a useful improvement as it allows increasing the level. However it would be useful to have a way of adjusting the overall level of a track (I know you can do this from Effects but its not as convenient). The slider at the top only affect the playback level. One can of course drag both extreme ends up or down by the same amount, but this won't help if modifications have already been made.

Perhaps if if were possible to option-click on the line and drag the entire line (including any previous modifications) up and down? It would be a much easier way of balancing one track against another than we have at present.

Just use the play level and flatten to a new file?

This is now called 'Bounce' - but it's not a lot of use doing it that way - you can't see the effect until after you've bounced it, and it would be just as easier to use the gain effect. What's needed is a way to adjust the track and assess the result against other tracks, non destructively.

When you adjust play, can't you then hear what you have done? I do this
all the time when I am mixing 4 and 5 tracks. I adjust the play levels
and listen to how it sounds and when I am satisfied, I flatten/bounce to
a new file. And yes, bounce has been the traditional term for the process.

Except that you can't increase the level this way it's a fair enough method. But I would still like the option of moving the entire sound level line. My suggestion of option-clicking it to move it all would be one way, but perhaps it would be more logical if the level slider was half-way up to start with and when you moved it it moved the level line. Also this would hopefully be kept on a save, so you could save, then later reopen and adjust the mix if required.
