A simple question on mp3
I suppose I could figure this out brute force, but asking seems easier!
If I load an aif file and then save it as an mp3, is what is in memory
after the saving what the mp3 would be if it were loaded back and
converted or is it the original aif file?

Re: A simple question on mp3
With Amadeus once you convert a file, what is in the RAM is the converted version (other programs may differ) but since the conversion is saved as a separate file the original still exists and can be opened.

A simple question on mp3
Are you sure?
I just loaded an aif file, saved it as an mp3. I then loaded in the
original aif file, inverted phase and flattened to a new file -- flat.
I then loaded the mp3 that was saved and the original file and did the
same thing -- not flat. (maximum was about 20 dB down)
This may well be true for other conversions.

A simple question on mp3
It's the original file. Saving does not affect the open document. Similarly, if youIf I load an aif file and then save it as an mp3, is what is in memory after the saving what the mp3 would be if it were loaded back and converted or is it the original aif file?
save to a document that messes up the multitrack structure or loses some
metadata, the open document is not affected. Regards,

What's confused me is that if you make a recording and save it as fred.aif, close it and re-opoen it, and Save As fred.mp3, the window title changes to fred.mp3.Martin Hairer wrote:It's the original file. Saving does not affect the open document.
A further oddity: create a recording with two tracks. Save it as fred.mp3 - the window title will change to fred.mp3 but the two tracks will still show - so this isn't the MP3 version. However if you close the window it will close without a warning, and the separate tracks will be gone.

A simple question on mp3
That's because the open document now links to the mp3 file, meaning that if youWhat's confused me is that if you make a recording and save it as fred.aif, close it and re-opoen it, and Save As fred.mp3, the window title changes to fred.mp3.
make further modifications and just hit "save", it will overwrite the mp3 file and not
the original file.
Well, it *does* show a warning at the point when you save (unless warnings are disabled)...A further oddity: create a recording with two tracks. Save it as fred.mp3 - the window title will change to fred.mp3 but the two tracks will still show - so this isn't the MP3 version. But you are right, this isn't necessarily 100% intuitive. However, the only way in which the
"correct" behaviour could be implemented would be to physically reread the document from
disk every time the user performs a file saving operation. This is *definitely* not the desired
behaviour, since it would result in a slower program and unnecessary quality loss. Regards,
