Help!

Post by BimboBoy »

Hi! I'm new to Amadeus Pro. I haven't bought the software yet, because I thought I'd try it out first. Now I have some questions that I hope you might be able to answer before I buy it. I'm sorry for my bad English, I'm from Sweden. :)

1. I am re-ripping my whole CD collection into Apple Lossless. However, I just tried editing an m4a file in Amadeus Pro, but when I want to save it, I get the following warning:

"Saving the document in the selected format may result in the loss / alteration of some features as described below. The document will be flattened to a single (mono or stereo) track."

Could someone please tell me if it's possible/how to save an edited m4a file without losing quality of the file? I'm not really sure what this message means.

2. I tried to remove some "clicks and pops" using the "repair center". However, it didn't work at all. Instead it made it sound worse. Is there another function in Amadeus Pro to do this better?

3. I used to use the software Soundbooth from Adobe to higher the sound volume of music ripped from old CD's (from the 1980's). I always used the "normalize" function and entered + 5 db to get the best volume. What would you recommend me to use in order to increase the sound volume on the tracks in Amadeus Pro?

Thank you! :)

Normalize - -eak 99.5% or zero dB will do it nicely.

But if I use "-" as you wrote, won't that make the sound volume lower instead of higher? :)

No,

You are normalizing the maximum to just slightly below the maximum
possible. You are not amplifying, but instead are setting the maximum
value to slightly below the maximum possible. That is the maximum
amount that you can amplify without getting distortion.

Try using help and printing the pdf manual.

Something else to experiment with: a Compressor.

Look under Effects/Audio Units/Apple/AUMultibandCompressor.

Try that before you try increasing the volume and see what happens.

Only one thing:
Turn up the volume of your playback device!

No offense, but from what you're writing, you don't seem to know what you are doing at all. Thus, in order not to make your CD rips sound even worse, you better shouldn't alter them at all. Just copy them to disc and leave them as is, then use the iTunes functions to adjust the volume non-destructively.

I'm an audio enthusiast since maybe 25 years, and in the past 15 years I've been even working as a sound engineer semi-professionally for a few years. But even I didn't dare to mess much with AUMultibandCompressor yet. A multiband compressor is one of the most complex beasts of its kind. Use it only if you exactly know what you are doing. And practice on less complex effects first…

cheers
