Setting AIFF compression?

Setting AIFF compression?
I have a AIFF file I exported from a DVD, it is quite large, uncompressed audio running over 4.5 gigs for 3 hours of audio.
My assumption is that I should compress this audio using one of the AIFF schemes, U-LAW, MACE, etc. in order to get it to the best size to fits on standard audio CD's?
What are the best setting for this?
Thanks in advance.

If you want to save it to a standard audio CD, you can't. Audio CDs
basically require aiff files. (not quite right but close enough).
To compress without loss, you could try FLAC or Apple lossless.
Otherwise, use mp3.

Hmmm?
I guess what I am trying to understand is that there are indeed compression schemes under the AIFF format. U-LAW, MACE and a few more.
Audio CD data runs around 800 megs for 80 mins, I have files that are AIFF, but are 2-3 times that size, clearly there is a way to get them onto a CD without burning 12 CD for a three hour concert?
Thanks for all thoughts,
Henry

More confusion?
I tried saving out a file in Amadeus using U-LAW 2:1 compression.
The file is indeed about half the size of the original. When I drop it into Toast for burning, it gets converted again and gets even smaller?
The I tried dropping some of the uncompressed files into Toast. They drop in without going through any conversion, but if I drop about 1.5 gigs of AIFF files into the Toast window, it says it can fit them all on a standard audio CD?
Hows that math work??

Setting AIFF compression?
I would try to burn a cd and see what comes out. The low price of a blank cd will be worth it.I tried saving out a file in Amadeus using U-LAW 2:1 compression.

Setting AIFF compression?
Not onto an audio CD -- onto a CD yes, but not onto an audio CD. An
audio CD is approximately 44.1khz stereo 16-bit words so there are a bit
over 10 megabytes per minute. End of story.
to quote wikipedia
MACE (Macintosh Audio Compression and Expansion) is an obsolete audio
encoding system. It makes a considerably smaller file than straight PCM,
but results in a huge reduction of audio quality and considerable amount
of noise at any bit rate. It has been used in, among others, AIFF file
formats.
and
u-law (mu-law) is an algorithm decreasing dynamic range.
Neither are what you want.

As data or as audio? I only see time when I throw it onto an audio CD.
Also, when you added the 1.5 gbyte, had you put the CD in? You can get
a huge amount of stuff in there, but when you insert the CD, it says no
way. You could be using a DVD so it will let you add more stuff than
will fit on a CD.

All is good
AS you suggested, the proof is in the burn. The burn went fine, audio sounds great, track markers are in place. All is well.
Still confused why the individual files are so large?
I mean if I take one of these extracted AIFF files and just open it in Amadeus Pro and save it, it gets cut done in size by about 40%
Anyway, thanks very much for your help.

Two possibilities: Large metadata in the files of some sort, or youStill confused why the individual files are so large?

are opening a 24-bit AIFF file and saving it as a 16-bit file.

How big are they? They should be about 10 Mbyte a minute. If you are
saving them in something other than straight aiff, you are compressing
them -- probably more correctly, throwing data out of them. When you
put them on a CD for audio, it is GOING TO BE 10 Mbytes per minute.
As far as I know, there is no socially redeeming value in saving them in
anything other than straight aiff. If you want to compress them for
storage, use mp3. At the highest accuracy level of mp3, you should
reduce the file by about a factor of 6.
