I haven't seen this happen before. I just spent an afternoon dubbing some songs from records (with my shiny new phono cartridge). I kept saving them as "Apple MPEG-4 Audio (.m4a)" with Apple Lossless as the setting. When I got around to looking at the files in Finder, the sizes were tiny.
I have tried quitting and relaunching. Sometimes Amadeus saves ALAC in an expected size but often it appears to over-compress the file. For example, a song in AIFF is 44.3MB but the supposed ALAC setting squeezes it down to 4.1MB. Amadeus 2.6 (2168) running on OS 10.14.6.

Stuck m4a decoder?
Weird... What happens when you try to play one of these files in the Finder and / or when you try to open them back in Amadeus?
Best,
Martin

I posted a question that probably should go elsewhere but can't delete. Ignore this post.
