I had a similar problem once. Fortunately, just before I hit Send to post the problem I decided to reverse the headphones and discovered the problem was now in my left ear.

Thanks Chuck for your insight on recording at low levels and then normalizing. I played around with that for a bit and, at least qualitatively, think you're right.
