Something else to experiment with: a Compressor.

Look under Effects/Audio Units/Apple/AUMultibandCompressor.

Try that before you try increasing the volume and see what happens.

I use the Griffin PowerWave. The PowerWave has a connector for the RCA plugs from the turntable which also has a grounding screw for the ground wire from the turntable. That seems to help me with static.

You can use a timer, under Sound/Record to new File.
