i'd read that the latest version of amadeus was struggling with newer versions of ventura on the mac (https://www.hairersoft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7892)
which is why i hadn't updated
but will try that now!

just upgraded
and working on my first file since then
when i go to split into tracks (split according to markers) i get this error message:
