try to switch off Time Machine. Well, I think TM (or rather the Iomega HD it's on) may have been the culprit. When I did disk repair ended up with invalid sibling error - tracked that down - and eventually got the disk back on line. Had to erase the old TM backups (what good's that I'm now asking ....
